Priscilla Foster: The Story of a Salem Girl (Her Story Series)
Published in Paperback by Silver Burdett Pr (April, 1997)
Average review score:

My favorite Her Story book. This book is about Priscilla Foster, a 12 year old girl living in Salem in 1692. Priscilla's friends have started accusing innocent people of being witches and before she knows it Priscilla has joined them in accusing people. Priscilla wants to stop but she finds herself unable to. This is my favorite Her Story book.
Best Her Story BookPriscilla Foster is one of the girls who see witches in the Salem Witch Trials. She tells her grand-daughter about her tragic and terrifying tale. Gives a must-read account of the trials.

Safety for Women and Children A Domestic Violence Education and Research Curriculum
Published in Paperback by Essence Publishing (01 March, 2001)
Average review score:

A Must Read For All WomenThe concept of this book deals with an ever increasing problem in our society- anger and violence. This is an excellent book in that it outlines very clearly the definition of violence and gives pertinent resources for the resolution of violence.
It is a must read for ALL WOMEN because: it empowers them to recognize an abusive relationship before becoming to involved with an abuser and deters them from accepting abuse, it provides information and guidance for those who are involved in an abusive relationship, and empowers them to leave, lastly, it gives information on how abuse not only affects the individual, but children and eventually society.
This book is a great contribution to anger and violence awareness and to the eradication of such an evil.
Prevention/Diagnosis of an AbuserLooking back on my Sociology class in college, I have discovered that this would have been a GREAT resource book to accompany my text. The author has organized an ideal characterization of an abuser and his victim. Perhaps through reading this book, many potential dependent women will become independent and their eyes will be open to the factors contributing to being physically, mentally, and or sexually abused. There are wonderful charts and diagrams (Venn) regarding the mental and physical factors of the abuser and the victim. The author has done a very good job in identifying the "cycle" of abuse. So many victims have closed their eyes to what they know as reality and choose to believe what is false. The section on "The cycle of abuse" was very informative. In closing, this was an informative, eye-opening reality check that must be read by all.

Sally Bradford: The Story of a Rebel Girl (Her Story Series)
Published in Paperback by Silver Burdett Pr (April, 1997)
Average review score:

A very educational book with a spunky girl.I really liked this book. I learned a lot. It was interesting. Sally was a spunky girl. She had the courage during a bad time to help her family.
Very good book in the Her Story series. This book is about Sally Bradford, a young Confederate girl during the Civil War. This gives a Southern perspective of the war. Sally's father and brother are away fighting for the south. Even though the Brafords own no slaves the Yankees still burn her house and the family must flee to Richmond. Then, Sally's brother gets typhus and is sent to a Richmond hospital. He needs quinine but the stores have none because of the war. Sally must travel across enemy lines to get medicine for her brother before it's too late. This book showed that there was more to the Civil War then the slavery issue.

Spooky Thing
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (January, 1960)
Average review score:

A perfect read-aloud book especially for adolescent boys !Late one afternoon while procrastinating my graduate school duties at the library, I remembered reading this book 35 years ago. I immediately searched it out and found the perfect distraction from studies. The Spooky Thing is a delightful old hillbilly tale from the Smoky Mountains. It tells the story of two cantankerous brothers that are constantly fighting each other(hmmm sound familiar?). Their hard-working father sends them on a trip to do the marketing with the instructions to return before nightfall or meet up with the Spooky Thing. You read the book to find out the delightful adventures of Merriweather and Git. Though long out of print some slick publisher could easily make a buck from reissuing this book.
"Chicky Licky Chowchowchow!!Take yourself into the hills of old Tennessee in this homage to scary storytellin' that should be in every repertoire! I well remember shivering through this tome on a tomb-quiet evening as a ten-year-old. Quite the tale; quite the tale. Told in a tall tale, telltale hillbilly style, the book Steele does his best is amply illu'ed by "MAD" magazine's Paul Coker, Jr. in his remarkable, scrabblepen style. YOU MUST F I N D THIS B O O K for me! You must!!

Stuck in the Seventies
Published in Paperback by Bonus Books (December, 1995)
Average review score:

A clever, witty retrospectiveThis is a wonderful little retrospective, with some very creative and funny observations. If you are anywhere between 25 and 45, the memories will come flooding back (and if you're like me, some embarrassment, too). It is also peppered with some great cartoon illustrations, a seventies quiz ("The 70's SATs") and a music anthology. Well worth it!
A hilarious book for everyone who lived through the 70's!This book really had my friends and me rolling on the floor with laughter! What a great collection of memories of this stupid decade-- the people, the fads, the TV shows and music. It's great for parties or just to have lying on your coffee table-- but watch out, your friends will try to steal it (unless they're really groovy). Highly recommended!!!

Sword and Scalpel: A Surgeons Story of Faith and Courage
Published in Paperback by Promise Pub Co (December, 1990)
Average review score:

The Inspirational Faith of Dr. Bob FosterDr. Bob Foster persisted against one set-back after another to build hospitials and clinics in Africa. He trusted God when it seemed futile and had a vision few other people would have dared to have. In spite of great accomplishments in medical care and 'bricks and mortar' his greatest character trait was his love for people and the time he took to let people know how he cared.
An excellent record of the life of surgeon Robert Foster.Lorry Lutz presents an intriguing account of the lives of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Foster, and their work as missionary pioneers in the Dark Continent, Africa. A testimony of the faithfulness of God in the lives of His children, "Sword & Scalpel" shows the Lord at work, guiding the hands of Dr. Foster as he performs miraculous surgeries in the bush. The book is an accurate life account of exciting events from grapples with Black Mambas, hippo hunts, Cuban invasions, and a light of hope in the darkness of the world. A must read for anyone interested in the life of missionaries, or those searching for the answers that only God can provide.

Triple Trouble for Hound Dog Zip,
Published in Library Binding by Garrard Publishing Company (September, 1972)
Average review score:

A welcome return to childhoodI was given this book for Christmas when I was around 8 years old. I read it at least a dozen times within the first few months of having it. The story of faithful Zip and how he looks after his dim-witted master amused me to no end!
Sadly, most of my childhood books have been lost in yard sales and numerous moves. Now I can't wait to share this little treasure with my neice, who is just learnig to appreciate reading. It is a fun books for kids, a great early reader, and just as amusing for adults to read out loud. It uses dialect and sounds that kids will love to hear and repeat (like Tom's "talking shoes"--SQEAKY-CREAKY-CROAKY-CREAKY-SQUEAK!).
This book is just plain fun!!

Ansel Aguirre is glad he found this book in his dad's garageI knew I needed a book report. It was due and I didn't know what to do. I went to the garage and asked my dad. He's pretty good at this deadline stuff. My dad smiled at me and walked over to the corner of the garage. There, under a couple of sawdust and dust covered mexican blankets was a book shelf, full of kids books. It was like finding a pot of paper gold. He had all these books from a long time ago. Triple Trouble for Hound Dog Zip was the book I chose for my book report and it was a good choice. The adventures of Tom and his dog Zip made me want to read more of Mr. O Steele's books. My dad says we can start looking for them at the garage sales. We both agree this is a good adventure to do together and that Mr. O Steele's books are worth looking for.
